E-Mail

Each Linux account is automatically equipped with a mailbox which receives mail under the addresses loginname@math.uni-bielefeld.de
firstname.name@math.uni-bielefeld.de
The version with firstname.name may not yet exist for old accounts - please test first.

There are several ways to read your mail:

  1. [For accounts, that have been created after august 2010 the default is as described in 3.]
If nothing else is configured, incoming mail is stored in the folder .inbox in your home directory, from where it can be read with text-based mail clients like mutt (recommended) or alpine. To do so, you must be logged into a computer at the math department, possibly via ssh.
  2. More flexible and thus recommended is the mail access via our IMAP server mailstore. For this purpose, incoming mail must first be forwarded to the IMAP server, and can then be read via any IMAP-capable mail client like tunderbird from anywhere in the world. Also many text-based mail clients like mutt can deal with IMAP.
  3. A further possibility is to access the IMAP server via a webmail interface, which is also useful to configure spam filtering on the IMAP server.
  4. Finally, former faculty members or guest would possibly like to forward their mail to an external address, and read it there.

For each of these different ways to access your mail, a separate user guide is required.
