Bielefeld -- Public Transportation

Getting around

Public transportation in Bielefeld comes in two flavors: subway/tram and buses. There are four tram lines and numerious bus lines. The University is served by subway/tram line 4 which can be boarded e.g. at the train station ("Hauptbahnhof") or at Jahnplatz (the city's center and transportation hub). You can recognize the entrances to the subway by signs saying "U-Stadtbahn".

Bus and Tram Tickets

There are vending machines for tickets at all major stops. You may buy single tickets from bus drivers, but for using trams, please remember always to buy tickets beforehand, since there is no ticket sale inside the tram. The usual prize for a ticket is 3,00 DM. Tickets obtained from a vending maschine have to be validated inside the bus or the tram; transfers are allowed without additional validation. If you buy (at a vending machine) 4-trip-ticket, you only pay 2,40 per ticket.

If you want to leave a bus or a tram, you have to give a signal to the driver beforehand, otherwise he will not stop (there are signal buttons inside the bus or tram).

Taxis

There are usually plenty of taxis at the train station (and also elsewhere). The usual fare from the trains station to the university will be approximately 15.00 DM.

You may order taxis by telephone: From inside Bielefeld dial 97 111 (Bieta Taxi).
