REC - which is short for Recreational & Educational Computing - is now in its 12th year (second half 1997). REC is about puzzles & teasers, programming (mostly QuickBASIC, but some Pascal or a little C on occasion), with math, reader letters, graphics, fractals, challenges, recreation, reviews, word-play, humor, tips, solutions, and more. One exclusive is the unique concept of "Mathemagical Black Holes" (similar to attractors). These range from digit-delving to word-play to graphics. Many ideas or programs are reader-generated or reader-contributed from virtually every continent. The spirit is playful, with an admixture of useful programs and - in the best academic tradition - indulgently useless ones! REC holds contests about once a year. Submissions are welcome to all areas. REC is edited and published by Dr. Mike Ecker, a Penn State math professor. Some of you may remember him doing this sort of thing in the mid-1980s in Popular Computing, Creative Computing, and Byte (e.g., he founded "Mathematical Recreations" in Byte in 1984 and wrote the "Recreational Computing" columns in the other mags). The level is usually lower-college, but high-school students can and do read and enjoy it. REC is a newsletter/ magazine with programs, including optional disk of same supplemental to the magazine. (The option, called REC-on-Disk, is separate from and different than REC itself. REC-on-Disk contains all the programs plus bonuses, shareware, etc. This includes programs that we may not have room for in the printed version.) Though most programs are for PCs, there are often translations for Macs. There is no index of back issues, as almost every issue is a mixed bag, but all back issues are available. Mike will also send more info by snail-mail or correspond directly. To subscribe: Send $27 payable to Dr. M. Ecker or to REC (address below). This covers one year. To cover higher postage outside USA, it's $29 to Canada, $33 other Americas, $36 elsewhere. Those who wish to see sample issues may have one for $4 or three for $10.
